 The Ascension of the Lord

“Know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time”. This promise that Jesus gave his disciples, as he was leaving them at the Ascension, is a wonderful truth for us today. It is a promise that is fulfilled in so many ways. He is with us every time we are together because he said that where two or three of us are gathered together we make him present. This has great implications for our homes and families. The love of husband and wife makes Christ present. The love of parents and children makes Christ present. And every gathering we are part of in our faith community makes Christ present. That is the meaning of being a faith community – a community of people who make Christ present for the world around them so that he can be Saviour for that world. We are powerfully reminded of this real presence of Christ through the Blessed Sacrament present in our community. This week we renew our faith in this mystery.

 Morning Prayer, when together

God our Father, make us joyful in our love for one another.

May we follow Christ into the new creation,

for his Ascension is our glory and our hope.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

 During the day, when apart

Lord, receive the offering of our love

as we celebrate the Ascension of Christ your Son.

May his gifts help us rise with him to the joys of heaven,

where he lives and reigns for ever and ever.

 Evening/Night Prayer together

Father, in our love for one another

we touch the divine life you give to the world.

Help us to follow Christ with love

to eternal life where he is Lord for ever and ever.

Questions for Action for the week

For your marriage: In what ways does praying with and for one another enrich your marriage?  Share on that this week.

For others: Think of some group of contemplative people in the Church today.  How could you be in touch with them this week?
