The Lord who welcomes sinners

“This man”, they said, “welcomes sinners and eats with them.” One of the dangers with religion is that it can be thought of as for good, holy people. And one of the lovely aspects of Christianity, especially as experienced within our Catholic tradition, is that it is for sinners. Holiness is our call, sinner is our condition, and there is no need to worry or be fearful. It can be difficult for us to accept this for ourselves and also for other people around us and so we find ourselves standing in judgement on one another and at times condemning one another. If we want to find Christ, though, we have to learn to reverence the poor, the weak, the sinful, and the faults and failings of others and ourselves. This is why criticism of one another has no part in our following of Christ, whether in our homes, in our close relationships or in our parish.

Morning Prayer, when together

Father of peace, we are joyful in your Word,

your Son Jesus Christ who reconciles us to you.

Let us hasten towards Easter

with the eagerness of faith and love.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

During the day, when apart

Lord, we offer you the gift of our love

which brings us peace and joy.

Increase our reverence for one another

and may our love bring salvation to the world.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Evening/Night Prayer together

Father, you enlighten all who come into the world.

Fill our hearts with the light of the Gospel,

that our thoughts may please you

and our love be sincere.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Questions for Action for the week

For your marriage: What annoys you about your wife/husband? How can you work at getting over that this week?

For others: How could you help those who are working for the marginalised around you?
