 Forgive always

Jesus said: (Forgive each other) “Not seven times, I tell you, but seventy seven times.” The old film Love Story had the famous statement in it: “love means never having to say sorry”. The truth is just the opposite. Love means constantly having to say sorry because that is the nature of close relationships. Forgiveness is a vital element in love because unforgiveness roots us in the past and in past events and experiences. Jesus’ word to us this week is to exercise and develop this power, especially within the intimate relationships of marriage and family so that our homes may be filled with peace and joy. This takes time and effort on the part of everyone. This power also needs to be exercised within the faith community, which can so easily be divided by hurts or by rivalries or past histories. And at this time of scandals in the Church, forgiveness is needed if we are ever to move forward with hope.

Morning Prayer, when together

Almighty God, our creator and guide,

may we serve you with all our heart in our marriage

and know your forgiveness in our lives.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

During the day, when apart

Lord, hear the prayers of your people.

Receive the gift of our love for each other.

May our marriage bring salvation to us

and to all whom we meet.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Evening/Night Prayer together

Lord, may our Sacrament of Marriage

influence our thoughts and actions.

May your Spirit guide and direct us in your way.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Questions for Action for the week

For your marriage: Is there anyone among your wife/husband’s family or friends

that you need to forgive?

How will you do it this week?

For others: Is there any one in your own life towards whom

you have a grudge or anger in your heart?

What will you do about it this week?
