 Practise what you preach

Jesus said to his disciples: “The greatest among you must be your servant.” When Jesus gives us his commandments of love as our way of life, he is not talking about how we should feel but rather about how we should live. Our feelings change very often but our love should continue to grow through the ways we are attentive to one another. In the marriage relationship, for example, this quality of attentiveness is one that needs to be reviewed and developed very regularly so that your love can shine out to your wife/husband and radiate out to the whole community. Each person in this relationship is not there simply for what they can get but also for what they can give. The same must be true of family life. And it is certainly true of our faith community. We can get into the mentality of being receivers within this community. It is so important to become a giver if our faith is to come truly alive.

Morning Prayer, when together

God of power and mercy, only with your help

can we offer you fitting service and praise.

May we live the faith we profess through our married love

and trust your promise of eternal life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

During the day, when apart

God of mercy, I thank you for the gift of my beloved.

May our love for one another grow each day of our marriage

so that our world may be transformed

and our lives may be filled with your peace.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Evening/Night Prayer together

Lord, you give us new hope because of your love.

May the power of your love in our marriage

continue its saving work among us

and bring us to the joy you promise.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Questions for Action for the week.

For your marriage: How could you plan a romantic evening together this week?

For others: How could you reach out to someone who has given up going to Mass?
